Black-Owned Businesses to Support and Follow

As we look to work towards sustained anti-racism efforts, we want to amplify and elevate Black-owned businesses, especially those within the plant community.

As a community for plant lovers, it is our duty to showcase how diverse and incredible the community is. We have made some firm commitments to ourselves and our community, and wanted to take the time to highlight a few Black-owned plant and floral businesses we admire and encourage you to support.

Online Plant and Flower Shops

1. Grounded

Washington DC-based Grounded is an online plant shop owned by Mignon Hemsley and Danuelle Doswell that was created to "help you disconnect and decompress through the appreciation of plants in the spaces we occupy." Head here to follow them on Instagram and here to check out their site.

2. Lillith Plant Shop

Lillith Plant Shop, also Washington DC based, is owned by Starsha Valentine and cultivates community in DC. In their own words: "We partner with local artisans of color and women to pair our foliage collection with diverse planers, pottery, and wood workings. Our pop ups and workshops are gathering spaces for people who are as passionate and curious about plants and urban indoor greening as we are." Follow them on Instagram here and check out their site here. 

3. Brooklyn Blooms

Brooklyn Blooms, owned by LaParis Phillips, delivers flowers throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, and focuses on creating "beautiful things out of beautiful things." They deliver arrangements for anything from events and weddings, to personal deliveries just because. Follow them on Instagram here and check out their site here.

4. Bradford Botanical & Co.

Atlanta-based Bradford Botanical & Co. sells both plants and flowers online and recently opened its online store in 2019. Check out their Instagram here and their site here.

5. Red Rose Florist

Red Rose Florist is a family-owned, Detroit-based florist that has over 40 years of floral design experience. You can order online or by phone for any of their arrangements and can also request a custom arrangement. Check them out on Facebook here and on their site here.

6. Soil Sisters

Sisters Raynise and Taray Kelly co-own and operate Soil Sisters, a Pittsburgh-based business selling herbs, vegetables and flowers. In their own words, here is their mission: "It is important for us to address the needs of local communities that are lacking resources, knowledge, and accessibility to fresh produce and seedlings. We are shortening the distance between the grower and the produce that reaches your table. By helping all growers, local restaurants, backyard gardeners, school gardens and more access to fresh food and fighting against food apartheid!"

7. Bloom & Plume Coffee

Bloom & Plume Coffee is an LA-based, family-owned business founded by florist and artist Maurice Harris that has both coffee and flowers, but goes beyond that. "Community means everything to us, which is why we resonate deeply with the South African philosophy 'ubuntu.' In essence, it means, 'I am because you are,' and it embraces the idea that humans cannot exist in isolation." Check out their Instagram here and site here. 

8. Birds & Bees Nursery 

Portland natives and best friends Caitlin Gaul and Amanda Lepley-Simard own Birds & Bees Nursery, which specializes in houseplants and pottery, as well as locally-made cards and gifts. They are "dedicated to selling locally-sourced, sustainable products for the urban garden, both indoors and out." Check out their Instagram here and their site here.

9. Lee's Flower and Card Shop

Family-owned and operated Lee's Flower and Card Shop has been a staple in Washington, DC since 1945. They have same-day delivery to local hospitals, funeral homes, nursing homes and wedding venues. You can check out their Instagram here and their site here.

10. Hardware 2.0

Brooklyn-based hardware store Brothers Community Hardware opened up in 1989 by owner Bob, and eventually transformed into Hardware 2.0, now managed by Bob’s son, Jitu Maat. 11. HarryJDesign

NYC based Harry J Design specializes in unique floral creations to brighten you home, office, hospitality or commercial space. From his Chelsea workshop, owner Harry Joseph, believes in supporting the community with locally sourced vendors for each arrangement, subscription box or floral installation. Currently delivering throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. You can check out their Instagram here and their site here.
